What are Second-hand, Used, Overstock, Surplus, Refurbished Computers etc and how do i select between them? Let's dispense with the myths 1st. i'm NOT talking concerning the sort of second-hand computers you get from some high street junk outlets, or the sort you can buy from free ads newspapers. These are the sort that get used computers a foul reputation since there are many dodgy deals to be had!
I'm talking a couple of completely different breed altogether, the sort of used computers you'd be proud to own and feel safe buying because they have proper and lengthy warranties on each and each one of them and are extensively tested and approved.
The criterion is kind of strict. Sure, there are any range of corporations out there who provide used computers at low prices. very few provide 12-month warranties however and plenty of of them disappear just as quickly as they arrived leaving you with a drag. All computers, no matter which category they fit in, or what you decision them, ought to be prime quality, guaranteed, absolutely operating computers from a reputable supplier.
So, let's place all the computers into 2 classes, i'm progressing to decision them 'used' and 'unused' computers.
1. Used Computers
Second-hand, used and used computers are what you would expect in that they have had a previous owner. many of the computers are came to the corporate from which they were bought in the 1st place. this is ideal because the company has the appropriate experience and spares already in place to correct any faults they realize.
There are variety of reasons why computers are returned :
- Businesses, colleges, individuals etc upgrade their pc equipment for the latest model
- The equipment was leased over a group amount and the lease expires
- The computer gets a fault that can't be fixed quickly therefore it's swapped permanently out for a brand new one
- The customer changes their mind just once getting
As you can appreciate, 'used computer' will mean something from 'barely used' to 'a few years old'. However, once came the computers go through a rigorous check procedure, have their arduous disks cleared or changed, have new keyboards, mice and cables if worn and new cases if they have noticeable harm. If there are any faulty parts, such as sound card, video card, floppy drive etc, these are forever replaced. These computers are usually stated as ex-lease, open-box, returns, refurbished, reclaimed, remanufactured, rebuilt, recycled, recertified or reconditioned computers. Phew!
At worst, the used computers, as sold on to you, have minor blemishes, scratches, dents or wear. this is forever just cosmetic and doesn't affect either the performance or worth of the computers in any means. What you receive could be a fully-working pc, constant operating condition as new, but at a worth well below that of recent. you can usually devour recent high-specification models second-hand and save many pounds. in fact there are scores of bargains to be had no matter model or kind you choose to purchase but note you will generally realize it tough to urge something as stock will go very quickly some weeks.
2. Unused Computers
The other main classes of computers are the overstock, surplus, liquidated, superceded, discontinued, open box or end-of-line stock. These are all primarily constant in that they are all UNUSED computers. therefore these don't seem to be what you would really classify as second-hand, ie they have not personally been owned and used by any business, college, individual etc. they will usually be in their original packaging.
The reasons why these computers come back on to the market are because :
The reasons why these computers come back on to the market are because :
- a manufacturer has brought out new models and wants to urge rid of the 'old' superceded stock in his warehouse
- a store desires to lift some urgently required money and sell his unsold stock
- a factory or store becomes bankrupt and the pc stock is sold
In most of those cases, the stock gets sold to specialist dealers who buy in bulk and who then sell it on to the public, businesses etc. They then either give a brand new warranty themselves for the equipment, or ensure there is a full warranty from the initial manufacturer. you will usually realize Toshiba, HP, Compaq and different brand name computers offered with a 12-month warranty from the initial manufacturer. Note that generally suppliers consult with open box as that means refurbished - they will typically state in the description what they mean.
So that is it. 2 main classes of computers, quite completely different from one another but each offering nice deals on branded equipment. Either means you will save cash and still get a peace-of-mind guarantee on your pc purchase.
One last point. make sure you check what you are getting for your cash. generally the computer could come back without Windows installed or without a monitor. do not assume - check. this can ensure you are proud of your savings AND your purchase.
